The Boyne Bash
and Race Weekend
January 22-24
Event and Story by Jim Michon

Well, I’m typically much too long-winded with my write-ups of TBird trips, and that’s pretty much because it’s difficult to contain my enthusiasm about the trip for at least the few weeks following it.  It’s no different this year, only maybe I’m a bit more excited [and exhausted]!

But, I am going to keep it simple and describe the weekend in pretty basic terms……good people, good skiing, good hospitality, good food, good dancing and good partying …….with that mix, how could you go wrong??!!
There was a lot of that, all packed into a short weekend in upper Michigan.  And, I’m grateful for all the new friends met on the trip.

Friday’s and Saturday’s great weather and super snow conditions made for some real enjoyable skiing on Boyne’s slopes.
Friday afternoon’s sunshine was particularly comfortable.  Saturday’s ski lessons were provided by Steve Vollmer, TBird’s Ski Instruction Director.

We had twenty nine club members “officially” on the trip, but it turned into a much bigger party with the club’s Race Team members joining us through the weekend.
Friday night’s traditional Snowflake Lounge pizza party was a big hit with the group.  Then, Charlie’s Root Fusion Band’s wailing harmonica and vocals got everyone out on the floor shakin’ their T’Bird tail-feathers to the heavy dance beat.  Surely the calories from that tasty Trophy Room pizza were burnt up very quickly!

Saturday night at the
Snowflake was pretty much a carbon copy of the previous night but with a different band, whose name was quite interesting.
Seize the Karp, a group of young musicians playing rockin’ music waaaayyy beyond their years, had nearly the entire TBird group out on the dance floor.   I’m sure that all of that fun kept some of the folks up “past their bedtime”.

Great features of the Bash are the perennial delicious buffet breakfasts each morning and then a huge dinner on Saturday night.
Those are included in the trip and make meals through the weekend a no-brainer.

Our lunch break, on Saturday, was set up at the Eagles’ Nest stop at the top of Boyne Mountain, and we packed the place.
Once again, I’ve got to mention the royal treatment that we got from all of the staff at Boyne for our entire stay.  In this case, reserved signage on each table made up with the TBirds Club name on them greeted us.  They blocked off a nice corner of the restaurant for our group’s use.  And, they made us feel welcome at every turn throughout the entire weekend.

Sunday morning’s rain showers made the weather man look good, I’m sorry to say.
That was exactly what we had heard forecast on Saturday night.  Not much you can do with what Mother Nature throws at you.  But, again, the hospitality of Boyne shone through, with them granting refunds on the lift tickets that were unused that day due to the weather.

All-in-all, a really great weekend was had by all.  What a great bunch of people!!  And, whether you came along to ski, to party, to people-watch, or just to enjoy relaxing in front of the fireplace with a good book, or even just soaking in the hot tubs, everyone there would agree on one thing………if you weren’t in on it, you missed a real good time!

The Wohelo legend continues to grow.........and hats-off to our fine club for sponsoring such fun events!
