Phantom of the Opera
Event and Story by Bob Grieve
Photos by Doris Byrnes
It was a warm and
sunny day in September when twenty four TBirds and twp friends,
Nita and Joanne from the Jug & Mug Ski Club (a.k.a. the Thunderjug Ski
Club, as named by Nita in Breckenridge) were off to see Phantom of the
Opera at the Detroit Opera House.
Three days before our performance Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber celebrated the
9000th
performance of Phantoms
as the longest running
Broadway show in history.
The
music of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber was bold, the singing was intense and
the voices resonated throughout the theatre. The lights and special
effects were fantastic. It’s a story of a masked person, Erik, who lurks
beneath the catacombs of the Paris Opera House reigning terror over
everyone there. He falls madly in love with Christine and spends
his time nurturing her singing talents. He accuses Christine of
lying and betrayal and plans to ruin the Opera Garnier if she doesn’t
marry him. When he feels remorse for what he did, he lets her go
free, holding her to the promise that when he dies, she will come back
to bury him with the ring he gave her. The performance was celebrated
with a standing ovation.
After the performance was over everyone was off to Union Street Saloon
where
wine
and drinks were served. All you could hear were the guests talking about
how they enjoyed the performance. The food was great and I’m sure
everyone else thought so as well since it got very quiet at the tables
as the food was served.
We hadn’t even left the restaurant and everyone was already talking
about attending Jersey Boys in January.
I’d like to thank everyone for making this a great event.
If you haven’t been to a theater event, join us sometime.
You
will love it!!! |
