The Thunderbird SnowSports
School consists of approximately twenty
instructors who provide lessons to club members and friends. Instructor lessons follow the Professional Ski Instructors of
America (PSIA), and American Association of Snowboard
Instructors
(AASI) guidelines. The School has
instructors certified in alpine downhill skiing, nordic downhill
(telemark) skiing, and snowboarding, as well as qualified cross-country
instructors.
Lessons for adults and children (8 years min.) are offered
by appointment at Mt. Brighton or Alpine Valley from January
through March. Sunday Club Events are scheduled
for January 13 at Mt. Brighton and
February 17 at Alpine Valley starting at 10:00 am. Lessons will also be available at the
Boyne Bash Weekend Ski Trip on January 25-27. On other club trips, instructors may provide lessons upon request. The lesson costs are $20/person/lesson. Lesson appointments can be

Thunderbird School
was originally founded in 1973. Local ski lessons then were provided at Mt Brighton on Monday nights. Lessons were also a major part of the Beginners Weekend Ski Trip. The
school started with approximately twenty instructors, and increased in size
to almost one hundred instructors in the 1990s. With the addition of
snowboarding lessons, the name was changed to the “Ski and
Snowboard School. In 2003, the name was revised to its current “SnowSports School.”
with approximately fifty instructors.
In 2007, Steve Vollmer assumed the duty of Director with
assistance from Steve Smith and Jim Winkelman.
