Wicked
at The Detroit Opera House
Sunday, December 11
Event and Story by Bob Grieve

On Sunday December 11th a group of 25 Thunderbirds and guests went to the Detroit Opera House to see Wicked. We ended up with a small problem with a couple of lost tickets but resolved that issue in no time when we got to the theater that morning.

The real question seems to be wicked or not so wicked. The story spins a whole new side on how the witches became the type of people that they were and how they were misunderstood. Glinda the Good Witch was a very beautiful, popular and vain person. The Wicked Witch Elphie was a very caring person and the Witch Nessarose that the house fell on was Elphie’s sister. Unfortunately she just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The story starts out with how Elphie the Wicked Witch of the West was green at birth and how the people around her always treated her as an outcast. Elphie and Glinda ended up going to school together and became friends. Elphie’s caring side was always present and she was always trying to do the right thing. She cast spells to help others and cast a spell on her sister who was crippled so that she could walk again. The ScareCrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion got to be who they were because Elphie cared enough to help them when their lives depend on it. Elphie ended up falling in love with Prince Fiyero who ended up being the ScareCrow and faking her death by being melted with water.

There was a standing ovation for an outstanding performance. As in life the moral of the story is not to judge people by how they may look or by what other people may say but by the type of person they are on the inside.

After the show we were off to Union Station where everyone enjoyed a casual dinner. As always I would like to thank everyone that came for making this event a success.
