Willow Park Biking and Blading
August 15
Event, Story, and Photos by Gari Chaffin

The expected 90+ weather forecast probably kept a few people away but they missed a fantastic day of biking and enjoying Mother Nature and each other.   The group consisted of some experienced riders as well as a self proclaimed “beginner.”  Karen Fratto said she was just getting into biking and did not expect to ride very many miles but after talking with “coach” she set out for a lap of Willow Metropark while waiting for the rest of the group to arrive.  At 10:30, when everybody had arrived we broke into 2 groups with Steve Mahr leading the faster bikers while Marie Tuohey led the medium speed group.  Karen decided to head out with the groups to Lower Huron Metropark after being assured by “coach” that if she did not want to ride the entire distance she could turn around and head back.  The group leaders as well as “coach” doubled back to ensure that the group stayed in contact during the ride.  We rode to the far end of Lower Huron Metropark and then headed back.  On the way back Karen got some additional “coaching” by the “coach” on proper bike shifting technique which enabled her to start climbing the hills without problems.  Coach decided to check out the adjacent I275 bike path which runs parallel to the expressway and has this advice for anyone thinking about it – DON’T!  Carl Mason also had some advice for riders heading out on a 90F day – don’t wear a black T shirt!

We enjoyed a picnic lunch complete with a flower centerpiece (thanks Marie) and specialty potato salad and homemade cookies (thanks Renee).  Coach encouraged everyone to eat their potato salad before he would get the cookies out of his cooler.  Others brought extra food to replenish our energy stores. We checked our mileage at lunch and Karen was amazed that she had ridden 20 miles that morning – her normal rides are 5 miles.  She did not even use “coaches” other nickname “F.A.H.” once during the ride.  She has asked to be added to the “biking group” and we look forward to seeing Karen on many more rides.

That afternoon we continued to ride while exploring Oakwood Metropark with others heading back into Lower Huron and finished the day hot and happy around 3:00.  Many of the group rode 40 miles while a couple were at 50 or over.  Next year make plans to join us no matter what your ability level – we guarantee a good time (and maybe cookies)!
