TBirds Go Nordic
At Garland Resort

February 15-17
Trip Leadership by
Louise Yee and Christine Andary

Fifteen of us had an enjoyable weekend at the beautiful Garland Resort in Lewiston in mid February.  Garland is the Midwest’s only AAA four-diamond resort, and the main lodge is the largest log cabin this side of the Mississippi.  With all of the amenities that Garland has to offer, in addition to the great ski trails, everyone had a good choice of things to do and ways to relax. After checking in and getting settled on Friday, some of us met for dinner at Talley’s Log Cabin Bar in town, which is known for their great burgers.  Later, after everyone had arrived, we gathered for light refreshments and socializing in The Penthouse.  The new Mrs. Karen Campbell (was Kargela) and Earl showed us their wedding pictures from their tropical December wedding.  Congrats, you two!

Saturday was a fun-filled day.  After a relaxing breakfast in the lodge’s beautiful dining room, we met for skiing on the resort’s own ski trails.  The weather and snow were great, and the trails were well groomed.  Parts of the trails took us through wooded areas, across trickling rivers and over covered bridges.  Afterward, some took advantage of the spa services and had massages.  The pool and Jacuzzi were also enjoyed.  Later in the afternoon we gathered for a wine & cheese party, which included giveaways and drawings for door prizes.  After dinner, we bundled up for a refreshing horse-drawn sleigh ride—the moon and a star-filled sky brightening the night.  Then we gathered around the bonfire before meeting again inside in The Penthouse for socializing.  Yoga Kathy again demonstrated different stretches, inviting anyone to join in, but Doo Ming was the only eager student.

We awoke on Sunday to freezing rain that was closing some roads and making it treacherous to walk.  Skiing was canceled, but the resort extended our checkout time so we could wait for the weather to improve before heading home.  We made the best of it and enjoyed the lodge a while longer before heading for home.

All had a fun time, and we thank all who were there for making the weekend a success!
